Air Tanker Drops Red Retardant to Tame Mission Fire

Sunol, CA – A brush fire, named the Mission Fire, erupted Monday near Mission Road and Andrade Road in Sunol, Alameda County. Dry vegetation fueled its rapid spread.

Cal Fire Santa Clara responded at 1:51 p.m., deploying ground crews and air support. Dramatic video captured an air tanker dropping bright red fire retardant to slow the blaze, which scorched 64 acres.

Smoke plumes rose high, visible east of Fremont, as documented by a UC San Diego wildfire camera. Firefighters, supported by helicopters, three bulldozers, and two air tankers, fought relentlessly.

By 7:02 p.m. Monday, the fire reached 75% containment. No injuries or structure damage occurred. Crews stayed on scene, strengthening lines and extinguishing hotspots.

On Tuesday at 8:36 a.m., Cal Fire confirmed 100% containment. Firefighters continued patrols to prevent flare-ups, ensuring safety for the community.
