Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, United States – On December 9, geologists from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory carried out an aerial overflight of the Kilauea summit region.
The flight followed lava fountaining episode 38 of the ongoing Halemaumau eruption, which occurred on December 6.
Video from the overflight shows a visible line on the ground in the lower left portion at the beginning of the footage. This line marks the extent of tephra deposits produced during episode 38.
The deposits are seen extending toward the southwest. They are located within a hazardous area that remains closed inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
