Borcea 86th Airbase, Romania – One Royal Air Force Typhoon from 3 (F) Squadron at RAF Coningsby carried out a tango scramble on April 7, 2026, as part of Operation Biloxi.
The deployment of Royal Air Force personnel and aircraft to Romania under Operation Biloxi shows the RAF’s ability to rapidly project air power in support of NATO operations. Moving a fighter force from the United Kingdom to the Black Sea region requires detailed coordination and planning.
Aircraft, personnel, equipment, and support infrastructure must all be prepared to operate immediately on arrival. Strategic airlift aircraft transport essential equipment and supplies, while RAF engineers set up the infrastructure needed to sustain operations abroad.
Once deployed, teams work continuously to keep aircraft ready for immediate response. The Detachment Commander, Wing Commander Daryl, said: “Deploying a fighter detachment from the UK to Romania is a significant undertaking, but our people have shown exceptional professionalism throughout. From engineering to logistics and aircrew, every member of the team has played a vital role in ensuring we arrived ready to deliver NATO air policing from day one. It’s a clear demonstration of the RAF’s ability to project air power whenever it’s required.”
The deployment highlights the RAF’s expeditionary capability, showing it can deploy, sustain, and operate advanced combat aircraft far from home bases. Working alongside Romanian and NATO partners, RAF personnel integrate quickly to deliver the Alliance’s air policing mission.
From the United Kingdom to the Black Sea, Operation Biloxi highlights the RAF’s commitment to collective defence and its ability to support NATO whenever required.
