Algeciras, Spain – Authorities have seized 120 kilos of cocaine hidden inside modified compartments within shipping containers at the port of Algeciras.
The drugs were discovered in double-bottom structures built into five containers that had arrived from Surinam. The shipment had been declared as carrying “raw wood,” but investigators suspected the cargo was being used to conceal cocaine.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case and are accused of offences against public health linked to drug trafficking. Two of those detained were responsible for coordinating the logistics of the transport, while a third acted as a front person to give the operation a legal appearance.
The investigation began after cooperation between national police and customs authorities, based on information received from international sources. It formed part of an ongoing inquiry led by a specialist anti-drug prosecution office in Algeciras.
Officers identified five containers matching the suspicious profile: goods originating in Surinam, declared as wood, and destined for a company in Spain.
During inspection, the 120 kilos of cocaine were found hidden in reinforced double-bottom sections of the containers and were immediately seized. Judicial proceedings were opened following the discovery.
Further analysis of commercial documentation helped investigators identify the individuals allegedly involved in coordinating the shipment and the person used to conceal its true ownership, leading to their arrests.
The operation is linked to broader European security efforts aimed at disrupting organized crime networks involved in drug trafficking.
