Lightning Storm Illuminates Chicago Skyline In Dramatic Nighttime Display

Chicago, USA – A nighttime video filmed by X user Nick Liveris captures intense lightning activity during evening storms over downtown Chicago.

Recorded from a high vantage point on the Near North Side near LaSalle and Division, the 21-second clip uses time-lapse and slow-motion sequences, with parts played at 20 percent speed. The footage shows the brightly lit skyline, including the iconic Willis Tower with antennas glowing in blue and purple, surrounded by clusters of illuminated high-rise buildings.

Below, a long street cuts through the darkness, marked by continuous trails of headlights and taillights. Overhead, thick clouds and fog cover the city as powerful white-purple lightning bolts repeatedly strike down, briefly lighting up the entire skyline before fading back into darkness.

The video was shared with the caption, “I saw a little lightning action from this evening’s storms in Chicago,” and was recorded from Nick Liveris’s SkyCam during the severe weather on the evening of April 27, 2026.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service and local authorities had warned of strong thunderstorms across northern Illinois, bringing threats of damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes, with storms continuing into the night.

The clip captures one of the most visually striking moments as lightning lit up the city while the system moved through the region.
