Bear Released Into The Wild After Dramatic Capture In Albany City Tree

Albany, United States – Video shows the release of a bear after it was sedated and removed from a tree in the city following an hours-long wildlife operation.

The animal was first reported around 6:30 a.m. on April 21 in a tree at the corner of Second Avenue and Raymo Street, prompting a response from environmental conservation officers and police.

Authorities secured the area and closed nearby streets while keeping the public back as a crowd gathered throughout the morning.

At around 11:40 a.m., a tranquilizer dart was fired at the bear by a responding officer. The animal initially showed little effect and climbed higher into the tree, before eventually falling into a net positioned below.

β€œIt was holding on like it was doing pull-ups,” said Sarina Heffernan, 33, of Albany, describing the moment the bear struggled in the branches.

After being brought down, officials confirmed the bear was uninjured and later became fully sedated while responders monitored it on the ground.

By about 12:30 p.m., wildlife staff loaded the bear onto a truck for relocation.

A wildlife biologist said the bear would be released into the Catskills once transport was complete, explaining that the sedative would take several hours to wear off.

The animal is believed to be a young male, around one year old and approximately 130 pounds, likely dispersing from its birth area in search of food.

Officials noted that young bears often travel long distances and can occasionally appear in urban neighborhoods.

Wildlife staff also explained that bear sightings in the Albany area occur periodically as animals move through suburban regions.
