Emergency Plane Lands On Busy Mesa Street Missing Traffic And Power Lines By Seconds

Mesa, United States – A small single-engine aircraft made an emergency landing on Main Street in downtown Mesa during the morning commute, narrowly avoiding traffic, power lines, and a nearby canal.

The incident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday near Gilbert Road and Main Street in a busy area filled with vehicles, businesses, and a transit stop.

A two-seat Piper Cherokee was captured on Mesa police dashcam footage as it safely touched down on the roadway.

Both occupants on board, a flight instructor and a student pilot, exited the aircraft without injury.

No injuries or damage were reported.

Witnesses and first responders quickly assisted at the scene. The pilots helped move the undamaged aircraft to a nearby parking lot as traffic backed up and bystanders gathered.

The street was temporarily closed for about an hour while crews removed the plane using a winch and a flatbed truck.

A mechanic working nearby described the moment as unexpected, saying the aircraft appeared under a traffic light after landing on the street, with power lines and poles running along the roadway approach.

A fire official said crews had prepared for a more serious outcome but were relieved by the safe result, noting that no vehicles were damaged and no one was injured.

The aircraft is registered to Venture West Airline Pilot Academy, based near Falcon Field. The owner credited the pilots’ response and expressed relief that everyone remained safe.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the mechanical issue that led to the emergency landing.

The incident is one of several recent aircraft emergencies reported in the region, including runway incidents, street landings, and crashes in other parts of Arizona.
