Mexico City, Mexico – Video recorded by X user Cristian Diez shows dramatic nighttime footage of a large fire burning in the Venustiano Carranza borough of Mexico City.
The shaky handheld clip, filmed from a high vantage point such as a balcony or rooftop, captures a towering column of thick black smoke rising violently into the night sky.
Bright orange and red flames burn intensely at the base of the fire, lighting up the surrounding area. The camera remains mostly steady, with slight movement as it pans across the expanding smoke cloud drifting over the city.
Multi-story buildings, illuminated windows, trees, parked cars, and streetlights are visible in the foreground and midground beneath the dark sky.
The footage is part of a continued view of a major fire that began around 10:00 p.m. on April 21, 2026, in semi-fixed stalls near the Mercado de la Merced and Mercado de Sonora.
The blaze was fueled by highly flammable party supplies, decorations, and pyrotechnics. Loud explosions were reported as the fire spread through the area.
Firefighters, police, and civil protection teams responded to the scene. Around 50 stalls were affected, and nearby buildings were also damaged.
Approximately 200 people were evacuated as a precaution. The fire was brought under control overnight, and no fatalities were reported.
