Mount Ypsilon, United States – Avalanche-related sloughing events disrupted a ski ascent attempt on Mount Ypsilon on April 19, forcing skiers to abandon their climb.
At 8:36 a.m., a sizable amount of slough broke free from the East face. Another release followed at 9:30 a.m. Additional slough activity also occurred shortly afterward in the main gut area. According to two other skiers, the material appeared to come from Y Face, a rocky section at the top of the left branch. The debris reached only the apron where it came to rest.
The group had started their attempt from Lake Lawn Trailhead, aiming for Y Face, also described as the looker’s left couloir. They ultimately backed out after several D1-rated avalanche incidents occurred during the ascent.
