Cheboygan County, United States – Severe flooding swept across Cheboygan County in Michigan as rising waters overwhelmed rivers, dams, and levees during a major weather event.

Aerial helicopter observations from a Michigan State Police aviation unit aircraft showed widespread inundation across the region, with swollen waterways pushing beyond their banks and muddy floodwaters spreading through multiple areas.

The overhead views included the Cheboygan Lock and Dam complex, where water levels rose dangerously close to concrete structures and surrounding earthen embankments. Nearby, the Little Black River levee breach was shown releasing powerful flows of water through a damaged section lined with rocks and debris.

Emergency workers wearing hard hats and high-visibility vests were seen operating near sandbags, cones, and heavy equipment as they monitored the breach and attempted to manage the situation.

Flooding also reached residential neighborhoods, where homes, driveways, and yards were partially or fully surrounded by water. Vehicles were seen in flooded parking areas, while bare trees stood over submerged streets and land.

Additional areas impacted included roads overtaken by water, a golf course submerged under rising levels, and wide stretches of forest and fields affected by flooding and melting snow under daylight conditions.

The event took place on April 14–15, 2026, when rapid spring snowmelt combined with heavy rainfall caused rivers and watersheds in northern Michigan to reach record levels.

The levee breach on the Little Black River forced evacuations of hundreds of residents in low-lying areas, while crews worked to reinforce the nearby Cheboygan Dam. A state of emergency was declared for the county as emergency services continued response efforts.
