Sabadell, Spain – X user Aníbal Garzón captured thick plumes of black and red smoke rising from flares placed on the ground and steps in front of the modern Regional Education Services headquarters as hundreds of Catalan teachers and supporters gathered on the closed street and sidewalks behind metal barricades.
Many participants wore yellow jackets or shirts, held protest signs, clapped, raised their arms, and some climbed railings for a better view. The scene included parked cars, bicycles, trees, and urban buildings under overcast skies.
The footage pans across the energetic crowd of educators of all ages, capturing the determined atmosphere of the demonstration.
The protest took place at noon on March 18, 2026, on the fourth day of a week-long teachers’ strike across Catalonia (March 16–20). Coordinated actions occurred in towns including Sabadell, Mataró, and Girona, demanding higher salaries, smaller class sizes, reduced bureaucracy, and greater investment in public education after unions rejected what they called an “insufficient” deal signed by the Catalan government with minority unions CCOO and UGT.
Major unions behind the strike, including USTEC·STEs, ASPEPC·SPS, CGT Ensenyament, and Intersindical, reported strong participation, with thousands marching throughout the week to pressure authorities ahead of a final all-Catalonia demonstration on March 20.
The moment was described as “Now in Sabadell, in front of the Education headquarters, Catalan teachers on strike for higher salaries and more resources for public education. And tomorrow, Friday, more struggle!”
