Iowa State Patrol Battles Whiteout Conditions On I-80 During Major Blizzard

Iowa, United States – ISP Trooper DeVault documented the extreme conditions on Interstate 80 during a severe blizzard on March 15, 2026, as heavy snow and high winds created near-zero visibility.

From inside a patrol vehicle, the dashcam footage showed snowflakes whipping horizontally across the windshield, illuminated by flashing red and blue emergency lights that cast purple, pink, and blue hues through the whiteout. Distant lights occasionally appeared, but road markings and other vehicles were largely obscured.

The trooper’s commentary highlighted the hazardous conditions, noting, “Hey, this is wonderful? See what visibility is,” emphasizing the danger drivers faced on the storm-battered highway.

The blizzard prompted warnings across 31 counties in Iowa, with winds gusting up to 65 mph and snowfall totals of 2 to 8 inches, producing widespread whiteout conditions.

Large sections of I-80 from Council Bluffs to Iowa City and I-35 from Ames to the Minnesota border were closed starting Sunday afternoon. First responders rescued stranded motorists, transporting them to shelters, while multiple crashes and power outages affected thousands. Roads began reopening on March 16 as conditions improved.
