Ames, United States – Kevin Cavallin documented a nighttime drive along a snow-covered rural road north of Ames, Iowa, around 8 p.m. on March 15, 2026, during a major blizzard.
Heavy snowfall was whipped horizontally by intense gusts, while headlights cast a hazy blue glow through the near-zero visibility. Distant traffic lights and road signs appeared only faintly through the swirling whiteout.
The dashboard perspective revealed treacherous conditions with pavement barely visible beneath accumulating snow. Yellow center lines and shoulder markers emerged briefly before being obscured again by blowing drifts. No other vehicles were seen, highlighting the isolation along the route.
The storm prompted closures on Interstate 35 from U.S. 30 at Ames north to the Minnesota border starting at 3 p.m. High winds gusted up to 60 mph, creating whiteout conditions and hazardous travel.
Snowfall totals ranged from 4 to 8 inches across central Iowa, causing impassable roads, power outages, and widespread advisories discouraging non-essential trips. Conditions gradually improved by the following morning.
