Bright Fireball Breaks Apart Over Calgary Night Sky

Calgary, Canada – X user David Thiessen recorded a striking sight from the ECTA parking lot in Calgary, Alberta, at around 7:54 p.m. MST on March 5, 2026, showing what appeared to be a bright meteor or space debris streaking across the sky.

The object appeared as a glowing white streak moving from right to left across the night sky, leaving a long luminous trail while breaking into several fragments that shed smaller glowing sparks.

The bright object burned with a pale yellow-white glow as it curved slightly along its path before fading in the distance, creating a display that lasted several seconds against the dark sky.

The sight drew reactions from people watching in Calgary and beyond. The moment also sparked speculation about whether the object was a meteor, a satellite reentry, or other space debris. The footage matched the caption: “YYC Calgary meteor. 7:54pm. Taken from ECTA parking lot.”

Similar sightings were reported across western Canada that same evening. Experts from the University of Calgary and amateur astronomers said the object was likely the controlled reentry of a Starlink satellite or other space debris, visible from Alberta to British Columbia under clear skies.
