Stranded Hikers Rescued From Snowy Mountainside Near Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, United States – On the evening of February 22, 2026, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office received a call for assistance from several individuals stranded near the Crab Flats campground area west of Big Bear Lake due to rapidly worsening storm conditions.

Although the hikers were prepared with cold-weather clothing, food, water, and communication devices, their vehicles became incapable of handling the evolving conditions. The early call for help allowed deputies to plan a safe and efficient rescue.

Air Rescue 308, staffed with two deputies and two firefighter/paramedics, was dispatched to perform a hoist evacuation during daylight. All five stranded individuals were safely hoisted from the snowy mountainside, with no injuries reported.

Officials noted that once weather conditions improve, and with a new car battery, the hikers will be able to retrieve their vehicles and resume future outdoor adventures.
