Snowbiker Triggers Large Avalanche In San Juan Mountains

San Juan Mountains, Colorado, US – On February 21, 2026, a snowbiker remotely triggered a large avalanche in US Basin, part of the San Juan Mountains. Fortunately, the rider was not caught in the slide.

Human-triggered avalanches remain likely across the region. Since Friday, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center has received reports of dozens of large avalanches caused by recreationists.

Recent heavy snowfall combined with strong winds has created a weak snowpack overlaid with fresh snow. Dangerous conditions mean avalanches can occur with little or no warning. Cracks or collapsing in the snowpack may not appear, especially where snow is deep.

CAIC warns that a “considerable” (3 of 5) avalanche danger requires cautious route-finding and conservative decisions. Travelers should check forecasts to identify safer terrain and understand the risks before venturing on or under steep slopes. Simple terrain—less than 30 degrees with no overhead hazards—is recommended for safer recreation.
