ELKTON, MD – A Maryland State Trooper is being credited with saving the life of a choking infant in Cecil County on Saturday after a routine traffic stop suddenly turned into an emergency.
At approximately 9:44 a.m. on February 14, Trooper First Class Nicholas Warren, a seven-year veteran assigned to the Maryland State Police North East Barrack, was conducting a traffic stop near Walnut Drive in Elkton, Maryland. After speaking with the driver involved in the stop, he was returning to his marked patrol vehicle when another car pulled up beside him.
The driver of that vehicle called out, “We need help. My baby is choking.”
Trooper First Class Warren immediately requested emergency medical services and took the infant from the vehicle to begin first aid. Following his training, he delivered back blows for several moments and was able to dislodge the obstruction. The child then resumed breathing.
Emergency medical services personnel arrived shortly afterward to assess the infant.
Officials credit the quick response, training, and calm actions of Trooper First Class Warren with preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.
