Maynard Police And Fire Teams Pull Dog From Icy Waters

Maynard, Massachusetts – What began as a terrifying situation for a local pet owner ended in relief and celebration on February 10, 2026. Around 9:04 p.m., authorities were called to Mill Pond after a resident reported their dog, Rufus, had fallen into a hole in the ice.

Maynard Police and Fire crews responded immediately. The Maynard Police Drone Unit deployed a drone over the ice to guide Maynard Fire Group 4 in a full ice rescue operation. Under the command of Captain Michael Parr, Firefighters Keagan Sheridan and Ed Wasiuk entered the freezing water, while Firefighters Josh Schrader and Captain Travis Gross remained on shore to manage the tenders.

Within ten minutes, Rufus was safely pulled from the water and returned to his owner. The dog was unharmed and able to go home for a warm night of rest.

“A pet falling through the water, in these freezing conditions, is any pet owner’s worst nightmare,” said Fire Chief Angela Lawless. “I am proud of the composure and teamwork demonstrated in the response between Group 4 and Maynard Police, which allowed for a quick rescue operation. This could’ve been far more serious if Rufus was in the water for a long period of time, but our crews made sure that would not be the case. We are confident Rufus will make a full recovery.”
