Far Rockaway, N.Y. – Three people were pulled from the frozen waters off Far Rockaway in Queens on Friday after falling through ice, in a daring rescue by NYPD and FDNY personnel.
Video from the New York Police Department shows the intense operation, with members of the Scuba Team, Aviation Unit, Emergency Service Unit, and the Fire Department responding.
In one clip, a rescuer lies flat on the ice, trying to pull a person from the water as the ice cracks beneath them. The rescuer then breaks through the ice to grab the individual, while another team member crawls to assist. Both are eventually hoisted out by helicopter.
NYPD News stated, “No matter the conditions, our officers are always ready to answer the call.”
Authorities warned the public to avoid icy bodies of water and stay indoors as extreme cold grips the Northeast. An Extreme Cold Warning begins Saturday night, with temperatures plunging into the single digits and wind chills below zero by Sunday.
