Santa Barbara County, California – A 26-year-old male surfer was swept away from shore by powerful high surf at 6:28 p.m. on February 6, 2026, after losing his board, prompting a dramatic water rescue.
The surfer’s friend immediately reported him missing, a quick response that proved critical. The surfer managed to grab a lobster trap buoy and held on while waiting for help.
Santa Barbara County Fire Department personnel conducted an initial shore search and found the missing surfer’s board washed up on the beach, confirming the situation.
Aerial drones equipped with infrared cameras scanned the ocean, locating the surfer about a quarter-mile offshore. Rescue swimmers, guided in real time by drone operators, swam out and safely escorted him back to shore.
Firefighter-paramedics evaluated the surfer on the beach. He did not require medical attention and was released at the scene.
