Lake Huron, USA – On January 21, 2026, the motor vessel Wilfred Sykes, a lake freighter, became trapped in ice on Lake Huron and was assisted by the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (WLBB 30).
The Mackinaw, a Great Lakes District ice-breaking cutter, cleared a safe path through the ice to allow the vessel to continue its journey.
This operation is part of Operation Taconite, where the Mackinaw and other icebreakers assist ships navigating the hazardous icy waters of the Great Lakes.
The successful rescue demonstrates the cutter’s vital role in maintaining safe shipping and responding to emergencies during harsh winter conditions.
