Deadly Wildfire Advances On Homes In Chile

Concepcion, Chile – A massive wildfire surged over the Barrio Torreones neighborhood in Concepcion on January 19, 2026, captured by local resident and X user aleilabaca. Thick smoke and flames forced residents to flee as the fire threatened homes.

The fire, fueled by extreme heat, high winds, and dry vegetation, created towering plumes of gray-brown smoke, darkening the sky and casting an eerie orange glow over the area. Modern suburban houses lined the streets as the smoke advanced rapidly, reducing visibility and air quality.

Authorities reported that the wildfires in the Biobío Region, including Penco, Lirquen, Tomé, and outskirts of Concepcion, killed at least 19 people, destroyed hundreds of homes, and displaced over 1,500 residents. President Gabriel Boric declared a State of Catastrophe as firefighters struggled to contain the flames.

Residents were urged to evacuate quickly while emergency services coordinated rescue and relief efforts. The advancing fire highlighted the extreme danger faced by communities living near the forested hills surrounding the city.

The situation remains critical as the blaze continues to spread across central-southern Chile, with authorities warning of further destruction if conditions do not improve.
