Deadly Shooting Shatters Funeral Service At Utah Church

Salt Lake City, Utah – A nighttime video captures a tense crime scene outside a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near 600–700 N Redwood Road following a deadly shooting on the evening of January 7, 2026.

The handheld footage was recorded around 9:30 PM, roughly two hours after the violence began shortly after 7:30 PM. It shows a dark parking lot and nearby street sealed off by bright yellow crime scene tape marked “POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS,” with flashing red and blue lights from multiple police vehicles cutting through the night.

Bare winter trees, nearby homes, and a fenced area form the backdrop. A large white pickup truck, described in some frames as an SUV or a pickup with a camper shell, stands out in the foreground near the taped perimeter.

Small groups of people in winter clothing gather quietly near the scene. Some appear to be family members or attendees from the funeral service that was taking place inside the church when the shooting erupted. Officers and additional emergency vehicles are visible farther down the road, while parking lot markings such as yellow curbs and arrows sit inside the secured area.

Police said the shooting stemmed from a dispute among known individuals attending the funeral service at the LDS meetinghouse, which serves a Tongan congregation ward. Two people were killed and six others were injured, with at least three in critical condition at the time.

Authorities stressed the incident was not random and was not a targeted attack on the religion. The suspect initially remained at large, and investigators faced challenges due to uncooperative witnesses.

The church confirmed it was cooperating with law enforcement as community members gathered outside the area, including near a nearby McDonald’s parking lot, waiting for information. The video reflects the shock surrounding a rare and tragic act of violence at a place of worship.
