New Dark Lava Dome Forms As Mayon Volcano Sheds Multiple Pyroclastic Flows

Legazpi, Philippines – A new dark lava dome has emerged at the summit of Mayon Volcano, sending pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) down the Miisi Gully on the southern upper slopes. Observers recorded the event at 11:40 a.m. on 8 January 2026.

Throughout the morning, Mayon has released a total of 49 PDCs across the Miisi, Bonga (southeast), and Basud (east) Gullies. Each flow carries glowing hot material and dense volcanic gases, posing extreme danger to anyone nearby.

Authorities maintain Alert Level 3 over Mayon, signaling a high risk of hazardous activity. Entry into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited. Residents and visitors are urged to follow all safety guidelines and stay clear of the slopes.

The activity underscores the continued volatility of the volcano, which has been closely monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
