Maumee Bay State Park – Video filmed by X user Garrett Moots, M.Sc., shows the dramatic effects of a Lake Erie seiche, exposing a wide area of lakebed that is normally underwater.
The footage reveals water levels dropping sharply due to strong winds, uncovering a landscape coated with patches of ice and snow. Areas that are usually submerged are fully visible, creating an unusual and striking winter scene.
The shoreline appears far from its normal position, with the waterline located roughly 200 meters from the original shoreline. An overcast sky hangs above the exposed lake floor, emphasizing the absence of water.
The video was recorded on December 29, 2025, and documents a seiche, a phenomenon in which powerful winds push water toward one end of the lake, causing a significant drop in water levels at the opposite end.
The post notes that beach coves are completely empty and that a sandbar normally hidden beneath the lake is now visible due to the receded water. The exposed terrain highlights the strength of the winds driving the event.
Such seiche events cause dramatic but temporary changes in Lake Erie’s water levels. Once winds weaken, water levels return to normal, leaving behind brief but striking views of the lake floor.
