Violent Winds And Seiche Turn Lake Erie Into Churning Fury In Ohio

Wickliffe, Ohio – Video filmed by X user cam216 shows Lake Erie in turmoil during a severe weather event on December 29, 2025.

The footage captures powerful winds and violently agitated waters, with waves slamming into a rocky shoreline. Bare tree branches in the foreground whip back and forth, underscoring the force of the gusts.

An overcast sky hangs low above the lake, while poor visibility reflects the intensity of the weather conditions unfolding along the shore.

Reports from the same day described extreme weather affecting Lake Erie. Winds reaching up to 80 mph were reported to have driven dramatic shifts in water levels across the lake, creating a seiche effect.

During this event, one end of Lake Erie experienced flooding while water levels dropped at the opposite end. In Buffalo, New York, the lake level reportedly rose by more than six feet due to the wind-driven surge.

The video documents the hazardous conditions created by the combination of high winds and the seiche effect, with turbulent water and a partially exposed shoreline forming a striking and dangerous scene.
