Snow Causes Spin Outs And Multi Vehicle Pileup On I-80 Over Donner Summit

Donner Summit, California – Westbound traffic on Interstate 80 was released over Donner Summit at 8:45 p.m. on December 25, 2025, following earlier disruptions caused by multiple spin-outs and jackknifed big rigs.

Earlier in the evening, at 7:20 p.m., westbound I-80 traffic was being turned around at Truckee as dangerous conditions over Donner Summit prevented vehicles from safely passing. Authorities reported no estimated time for reopening at that point.

Eastbound traffic was later released over the summit, with the California Highway Patrol escorting vehicles to ensure safe passage. Drivers were advised to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and expect delays while congestion was addressed.

At 8:28 p.m., eastbound traffic was held at Castle Peak due to a pileup involving more than 10 vehicles over Donner Summit. Officials stated there was no estimated time for reopening, as clearing the scene would take time.
