Canton, Ohio – Canton police arrested two suspects after a shocking attempted shooting during a shoplifting incident at Walmart on Thursday.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., an officer was processing Shane Newman, 21, and Katerina Jeffrey, 23, in the store’s loss prevention office at 3200 Atlantic Blvd. NE. During the encounter, Newman produced a handgun and tried to fire at the officer, but the weapon did not discharge.
With the assistance of a Walmart loss prevention employee, the officer subdued Newman after a brief struggle. No one was injured.
Newman faces multiple charges, including attempt to commit murder, felonious assault on a peace officer, robbery, aggravated possession of drugs, and having weapons under disability. Jeffrey has been charged with complicity to commit robbery.
The Canton Police Department released body camera footage of the incident on Friday.
Canton Police Chief John Gabbard emphasized the dangers officers face: “This incident is a reminder of the ever-present threat of violence against police officers and the gracious provision of God’s protection. Thank you to all of you who regularly pray with me for our officers and our community.”
