Chaos Erupts As Smoke Fills Mexico City Metro Train

Mexico City, Mexico – A video posted on X by Manuel Ruz shows a crowded train on Line 1 of the Mexico City Metro near Merced station filled with thick gray smoke, creating a chaotic and hazardous scene.

Passengers were visibly distressed. Some stood near doors and windows, while others forced open or bent windows to escape. People on the platform helped pull passengers out of the train. The train was either stopped or moving slowly, with audible panic, shouting, and announcements over the intercom.

According to Ruz’s firsthand account posted on December 17-18, 2025, he and his partner were traveling toward Pantitlán when, departing Merced station around 22:35, a bright flash and explosive sound came from the first car. Sudden braking and smoke poured in. Police rushed to the front, but doors initially would not open due to emergency levers.

Passengers shouted for help and climbed out through windows, especially from the rear car still partially on the platform, assisted by police and other passengers. Despite police urging passengers to remain, a second, stronger explosion produced more smoke. The train driver announced over the intercom that the train could not move further due to the emergency levers. Ultimately, everyone escaped, with elderly or impeded individuals aided by those outside. Ruz reported no major injuries.

The official Metro CDMX response confirmed the incident was caused by a short circuit, likely triggered by a metallic object. The train was inspected, evacuated, and removed from service. Line 1 circulation resumed normally afterward.
