Intense Rain Floods Catarroja Streets And Garages, Reviving Fear Of Gota Freda

Catarroja, Spain – Torrential rain struck Catarroja in Horta Sud, causing streets and garages to flood and overwhelming the local sewer system. The heavy downpour has revived fears of last year’s “gota freda” event, according to Mayor Lorena Silvent, who described the situation as alarming.

The rainfall totaled 66.6 liters per square meter, with 15 liters falling in just one hour. Between 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., the intense storms caused significant water accumulation in critical areas of the municipality, keeping municipal services active throughout the night.

The Valencia Provincial Fire Consortium reported responding to a dozen emergency calls overnight across nearby towns including Paiporta, Benetússer, Alfafar, and especially Catarroja. Firefighters conducted water extraction from a flooded garage and worked to improve drainage in public streets.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as local services manage the aftermath of the torrential rainfall.
