Man Rescued After Being Swept Away By Flash Flood In Alhama De Murcia

Alhama De Murcia, Spain – A man was rescued after being carried several meters by a flash flood and clinging to a tree to call for help in Alhama de Murcia. The incident occurred early Monday morning along the road connecting Alhama de Murcia to the local industrial area.

Authorities say heavy overnight rainfall caused the sudden surge in the rambla Guadalentín. Civil Guard officers, assisted by firefighters, reached the man, who showed signs of hypothermia, and he was treated by emergency medical services.

The red alert for heavy rains issued for the Valle del Guadalentín, Lorca, Águilas, and Vega del Segura was downgraded to orange by morning, though up to 100 liters per square meter are still expected within 12 hours.

In nearby Andalusia, authorities responded to 159 weather-related incidents, including rescues and structural collapses. Officials warned that some residents acted recklessly despite the extreme danger, particularly when traveling on roads during severe rainfall. Most incidents involved flooded homes, basements, garages, and problems with public sewage systems.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued orange alerts for heavy rain in Tarragona, Castellón, Teruel, and the Pyrenees of Huesca, with the Ebro River Authority warning of potential sudden rises in small rivers and streams. Residents are urged to follow civil protection recommendations and stay updated on weather alerts.

Forecasters say that Storm Emilia, which triggered red alerts over the weekend, is giving way to a week of rain across much of Spain, with temperatures dropping. Heavy showers are expected Monday afternoon in the Mediterranean and Galicia, followed by continued rain in central, northern, and Mediterranean areas through midweek, with snow in the Sistema Central.
