Police Officer Risks Life Stopping Wrong-Way Driver In Head-On Crash

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma – In the late hours of November 14, Trooper Cody Beaver was dispatched to a report of a vehicle traveling the wrong direction on the Creek Turnpike in Broken Arrow.

When he reached the construction zone, he saw the wrong-way driver moving through a closed-off section of the turnpike.

Trooper Beaver activated his lights and siren and positioned his patrol car directly in front of the oncoming vehicle, intending for the driver to stop before reaching him.

The driver had the opportunity to stop but failed to do so, striking Trooper Beaver’s patrol car in a head-on impact.

After the collision, Trooper Beaver conducted roadside sobriety tests and quickly determined the driver was extremely intoxicated.

She was arrested and taken to a local hospital for evaluation before being transported to jail to sober up and face charges.

Under Oklahoma’s new DUI law, she was charged with a felony DUI. Additional charges include aggravated driving under the influence, improper driving on a divided highway, and failure to carry an insurance form.

Officials noted that a trooper’s patrol unit is a vital tool, and they are grateful that in this case, only the vehicle was damaged. They emphasized they have responded to countless crashes where lives were lost due to similar decisions.

Authorities urged the public not to drive after drinking, reminding drivers that ride share services, designated drivers, and taxis offer safe alternatives. One responsible choice, they said, can mean the difference between life and death.
