Lava Fury Returns To Halemaumau As Kilauea Braces For Next Eruption

Kilauea Summit – USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists reported lava churning in the north and south vents at the summit of Kilauea on Friday, November 21.

Soon after, lava advanced onto the floor of Halemaumau crater for the first time since episode 36 on November 9.

That renewed activity carried on through the weekend, producing a total of 73 overflows onto the crater floor.

Over the past 24 hours, the summit of Kilauea has deflated and the overflows have ceased, leading forecasters to shift the expected timing of episode 37 to slightly later.

According to the updated outlook, episode 37 could begin at any time during this Thanksgiving week.
