Winter Storm Eases Over Donner Summit As Chains Come Off

Donner Summit, California – Chain control has been lifted over Donner Summit as winter weather begins to ease, but officials warn that conditions remain hazardous.

Roads are still slick, and Caltrans plows continue working across the area. Drivers are urged to slow down and remember that the end of chain control does not mean the Summit has turned into a racetrack. Motorists are asked to drive smart and stay safe.

As of 10:30 a.m. on November 20, 2025, the big rig collision on eastbound I-80 near Donner Summit has been cleared, and the roadway is open.

Caltrans crews remain active in the storm zone, working to keep lanes clear. Drivers are reminded to watch for plows, reduce speed, and give themselves extra space while traveling in ongoing winter conditions.
