Helicopter Footage Captures Wildfire Threatening Castromil Before Containment

Castromil, Spain – A large wildfire erupted near the border of Zamora, Spain, and Ourense, Portugal, on September 5, 2025, threatening local residents and infrastructure.

Helicopter footage captured an aerial view of the fire, showing its intensity as it escalated to level 2 on the Índice de Gravedad Potencial (IGR), prompting the confinement of Castromil. By September 8, the blaze was downgraded to level 1, with 60% of the perimeter secured and no active flames, allowing the town to lift its confinement.

At the height of the emergency, firefighting efforts involved up to 14 aerial units and 50 total resources. Investigators identified the fire’s origin as intentional, adding urgency to containment operations.

This incident highlights the growing wildfire risks in Southern Europe, exacerbated by dry conditions, high temperatures, and climate change. The 2025 fire season in Spain has been particularly severe, placing additional pressure on emergency responders.

Authorities praised the coordinated response of firefighting teams, including BRIF Tabuyo, whose prompt arrival and aerial support were crucial in securing the area and protecting residents.
