A Cañiza, Spain – Fire crews have been battling an intense wildfire near the town of A Cañiza in the province of Pontevedra. The fire broke out in the parish of O Couto and has already consumed approximately 200 hectares of forested land.
Authorities reported that the blaze started at five different points along a road, which allowed the flames to spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds and dry weather conditions.
Hundreds of soldiers from the UME (Military Emergency Unit) have joined firefighting efforts in the area, using drones and thermal cameras to monitor the fire throughout the night. Nearby areas such as Caminomorisco and Cuevas del Valle also see significant deployment of personnel working tirelessly to contain the flames.
The regional government declared a Level 2 emergency due to the fire’s proximity to the populated village of Nogueiró, raising concerns about the safety of residents.
The Ministry of Defense expressed gratitude to all the personnel involved, highlighting the ongoing collaboration and commitment to protecting the affected communities.
