Powerful Fissure Eruption Strikes Southeast Iceland Before Dawn

Litla-Skogfell, Iceland – A volcanic eruption began just before 4:00 AM, with its source located southeast of Litla-Skogfell, in an area that saw significant volcanic activity in August.

The eruption opened along a fissure estimated to be between 700 and 1000 meters long. Observations suggest that the fissure is not currently expanding.

Earlier this morning, video footage captured the eruption site. The visible ground crack is believed to stretch about 2 kilometers.

The eruption is unfolding in roughly the same area as the crater that remained active the longest during the August event.
