Maricopa, Arizona – Authorities successfully located a 5-year-old boy who had wandered into the desert with his dog on June 22.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office shared nearly three minutes of bodycam footage on June 30 showing the search and rescue efforts.
Dispatchers told deputies the child had run away chasing the family dog while wearing an all-green outfit. The boy’s grandmother said the dog usually returned but had not come back this time.
In the video, an officer is seen walking through bushes before spotting the boy and his dog nearby.
“Hi buddy!” the officer says as he picks up the child around 11 p.m. Other deputies try to catch the dog.
One officer carries the boy on his shoulders and says, “Are you ready to fly?” before setting him down and asking, “You want to go for a ride? Want to go see mama? Let’s go see her!”
The footage ends with an emotional reunion between the boy and his family.
“Don’t do that!” a tearful woman says while hugging him.
Officers told the family where the boy was found but explained they could not get the dog to follow them.
