Violent Thunderstorm Slams North Phoenix Home With Sideways Rain

Phoenix, Arizona – Sheets of rain whipped sideways across a backyard in north Phoenix as a violent thunderstorm hammered the city on Wednesday afternoon, October 21.

X user Bob McClay filmed the storm from a patio door at home near 32nd Street and Union Hills Drive, writing, “The thunderstorm just slammed our house.” “This is right after I hung up the phone with you Renee. Crazy,” McClay says in the clip. The footage shows a hanging ornament and potted plants thrashing in the wind as rain pounds the patio and the lawn disappears behind a white curtain of water.

The National Weather Service had warned of golf ball-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts across Maricopa County. Trained spotters reported hail up to 1.75 inches just a few miles away, east of Deer Valley, at around 3:45 p.m.

In north Phoenix, near 19th Avenue and Peoria Avenue, hail shattered apartment windows, smashed windshields and dented cars, and strong winds brought down large trees. More than 2,400 APS customers and nearly 2,000 SRP customers lost power. No injuries were reported.
