Hail Blankets Show Low as Severe Storms Pound Arizona Mountains

Show Low, Arizona – Hail pelted down and turned the ground white around parked pickup trucks in Show Low as a string of severe thunderstorms swept across Arizona’s White Mountains on Thursday, October 22.

X user craig matthews filmed the storm from a car near the town’s airport during a lunch break, saying there was “mostly dime sized hail, with occasional nickel sized hail” at the spot and calling it “yet another Severe Warned Storm in Show Low.” The footage shows hailstones bouncing off the gravel and piling up in tire tracks as a white pickup sits in the downpour.

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside at 12:13 p.m., warning of quarter-size hail, and a trained spotter reported 1-inch hail just northwest of Show Low at 1:06 p.m.

More storms followed that afternoon. The weather service warned of golf ball-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts near Show Low at 4:28 p.m., and a tornado warning was issued for areas around the town, including Linden and Pinedale, until 5:15 p.m. A tornado watch covered parts of eastern Arizona until 8 p.m.
