Massive Fire Engulfs South Bend Apartment Construction Site

South Bend, Indiana – A video filmed by X user Nik Thomas shows a massive fire engulfing an apartment construction site in downtown South Bend shortly after midnight on September 8, 2026.

The 33-second footage shows a construction site fully ablaze, with a wall of orange flames and a tall black-and-orange smoke column rising into the night. The camera zooms in as the flames leap higher, while emergency lights flicker on nearby streets.

South Bend Fire crews were called to the Stadium Flats apartment construction site near Lafayette Boulevard and South Street, across from Four Winds Field, after callers reported the site and a crane fully involved.

Crews found heavy fire, struck a second alarm and used nearly every available city unit. Assistant Chief Derek Erquhart later described it as “a lumber yard on fire basically.”

The construction site was a total loss. Firefighters stopped the flames from reaching the occupied Diamond View Apartments and the South Bend Cubs Performance Center. Diamond View was evacuated, heat broke several top-floor windows and some doors were forced.

Four Winds Field was not damaged, while siding and a sign at the performance center were. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.

A groundbreaking for Stadium Flats and a Diamond View ribbon-cutting, both scheduled for that afternoon, were cancelled. Mayor James Mueller called the fire a setback for the planned 150-unit project, with 90 market-rate and 60 affordable units.
