Boundary County, Idaho – The lightning-caused Upper Smith Fire has burned 1,573 acres and was 15% contained as of the latest updates on July 28, 2026.

Aerial footage shows flames burning through timbered slopes and drainages in the Smith Creek drainage, about 20 miles northwest of Bonners Ferry. Smoke rises from active areas along ridges and flanks as crews work around the fire perimeter.

Helicopters, including a Chinook carrying a water bucket, and single-engine air tankers conduct suppression drops over the burning landscape.

More than 400 personnel, along with helicopters, engines and heavy equipment, have been assigned to the fire.

A GO evacuation order was issued July 28 for the Westside Zone and Smith Creek Zone.

Firefighters continue firing operations and line construction, supported by aircraft, as they work to hold the fire west of Smith Creek and protect nearby values.
