Gila National Forest, New Mexico, USA – Aerial reconnaissance footage shows the Sacaton Fire actively burning across steep, forested ridges in the Gila Wilderness.
The video captures thick columns of white and yellowish smoke rising from multiple areas along the hillsides. Orange flames and glowing hotspots are visible as vegetation burns across the rugged landscape.
The aircraft passes over large sections of charred forest with standing dead trees and downed timber. Patches of unburned green forest remain between blackened areas, while dense smoke moves through valleys and drainages, partially hiding the terrain.
The lightning-caused Sacaton Fire began on June 21, 2026, about 15 miles east of Glenwood. By early July, the fire had expanded to more than 8,600 acres with 0% containment.
The fire is reported at approximately 8,638 acres with 149 personnel assigned. Single Engine Air Tankers dropped retardant to protect the Willow Creek Subdivision, which remains under GO! evacuation status.
Crews continue working in steep terrain and near previous burn scars. An emergency road closure remains active on Bursum Road/NM-159.
The reconnaissance flight provides a view of the fire’s challenging behavior in remote wilderness areas while supporting containment and structure protection efforts.
