Portland, Oregon, United States – Red panda Liu, a 6-year-old male from the Toledo Zoo, has arrived at the Oregon Zoo and is settling into his new habitat.

He was seen exploring his outdoor space for the first time as caretakers observed how he adapts following his arrival last week.

Zoo staff are preparing to introduce Liu to Enoki, a female red panda who arrived the previous month, with hopes the pair will bond successfully.

During observations, the zoo’s director of animal health described Liu as “very handsome” and noted, “His tail is so blond — surfer blond,” while visiting his habitat.

Caregivers overseeing the red panda area say the introduction is part of a wider conservation effort for the endangered species. They explained that habitat loss, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade have significantly reduced populations over the past 25 years.

Red pandas are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The pairing follows recommendations from a coordinated Species Survival Plan across accredited zoos, designed to maintain a genetically diverse population.

Staff say Enoki is smaller with a darker coat, while Liu has a lighter blond tail, making them easy to tell apart.

Liu was born on June 28, 2019, at the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn. His name, meaning “willow” in Mandarin Chinese, is a tribute to his mother Willow.

Red pandas are not related to giant pandas and belong to the Ailuridae family. They live in Himalayan and southwestern China mountain forests, where their fur helps them blend into the environment.
