Cape Coral, Florida – Firefighters responding to a report of a dog stranded in a canal ended up rescuing what was later identified as a coyote pup.

The Cape Coral Fire Department said Engine 9 and Rescue 9 crews were dispatched on Monday after reports of a dog in a canal at Britannia Lake.

A local resident in a kayak helped track the animal, keeping watch on its location and guiding firefighters to the dock area where it had disappeared beneath the water.

Firefighters entered the water and recovered the animal from the submerged space. It was later confirmed to be a coyote pup, described as exhausted and unable to be released at the scene.

After the rescue, the animal was transported to East West Veterinary Care Center. It is expected to be moved to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife for care until it is healthy enough to be released.

The woman in the kayak, along with a neighbor who had previously attempted to assist the animal, were later awarded Community Recognition Coins by firefighters for their efforts.
