SpaceX Starfall Secret Mission Sparks Mystery After Falcon 9 Launch

Florida, United States – SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at 6:53 a.m. EDT (1053 UTC) on Tuesday, carrying a demonstration mission featuring its new uncrewed reentry capsule named Starfall.

The launch took place under highly favorable conditions. The 45th Weather Squadron had predicted a 95 percent chance of good weather, with only a small possibility of interference from cumulus clouds.

SpaceX provided limited public information about the mission. The company ended its live broadcast after the booster landing and did not show the upper stage or the Starfall capsule. It also did not disclose how many spacecraft were onboard.

A Federal Aviation Administration environmental assessment published in May stated that SpaceX planned to “perform two Starfall reentries to demonstrate capabilities for future transport and delivery of goods through space,” but it is still unclear whether this flight carried one or more capsules.

The mission used Falcon 9 booster B1078, which completed its 29th flight after previous missions including NASA’s Crew-6, USSF-124, and SES’ O3b mPOWER-B.

Roughly nine minutes after liftoff, the booster landed on the drone ship “A Shortfall of Gravitas” in the Atlantic Ocean. This marked the vessel’s 157th landing and SpaceX’s 628th booster landing overall.

Starfall is part of SpaceX’s growing spacecraft lineup alongside systems like Starlink and Starshield. The capsule can be launched on Falcon 9 or Starship-Super Heavy and may operate in low Earth orbit or on a suborbital trajectory.

An IPO presentation graphic suggested a spacecraft bus design with capacity for up to four Starfall capsules and included the label “In-orbit manufacturing.”

According to FAA documentation, each Starfall capsule is a cylindrical structure approximately 0.75 meters tall and 3.1 meters in diameter, weighing about 2,100 kilograms, and capable of carrying up to 1,000 kilograms of payload.

The capsules are designed for ocean recovery in the Pacific Ocean and use no main propulsion system, relying instead on inert gas attitude control. They separate into a top plate and heat shield during reentry, followed by deployment of a three-stage parachute system.

The documentation also outlined broader goals, including rapid space-based cargo delivery and the development of a commercial in-space manufacturing market using microgravity and orbital operations.
