Big Piney, Wyoming – A slender rotating funnel cloud descended from dark storm clouds toward the ground over the Mesa north of town in a video filmed by the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office.
The vortex swirled visibly against the stormy sky as the camera, positioned at a distance, captured the dramatic formation moving across the landscape.
The video was recorded by Sheriff Lehr from Big Piney while facing north toward the Mesa.
A well-formed landspout was spotted in Sublette County on June 20, 2026. The tornado-like column of rotating air develops from the ground upward and is typically not associated with a supercell thunderstorm’s mesocyclone.
Local residents and law enforcement documented the rare event as storms developed across the area. The funnel appeared briefly before dissipating.
Landspouts form in environments with strong wind shear and surface heating. They can pose localized risks but are often shorter-lived than traditional tornadoes.
No major damage was immediately reported following the sighting.
