San Bernardino, California – Fire crews carried out a dangerous confined space rescue beneath a highway overpass after reports of a small fire and a possible trapped person in a restricted underground area near S. Tippecanoe Avenue and E. Central Avenue on June 10, 2026.

San Bernardino County Fire teams arrived to find fire activity inside a narrow space between the roadway and the underside of the overpass, with conditions described as dark, smoky, and filled with debris.

Incident command was established as crews prepared for a permitted confined space entry due to the hazardous environment and reports from bystanders that someone may have been inside.

Firefighters deployed ventilation equipment, including a large portable fan, to push air through the confined area and reduce smoke buildup. Visibility remained limited as crews moved carefully through rubble while coordinating their search.

Teams used flashlights to inspect damaged concrete sections and worked in close coordination inside the restricted space. After advancing through the hazardous conditions, rescuers located the trapped individual.

Firefighters and support personnel then carried out a controlled extraction, guiding the patient out of the confined space and onto a stretcher placed on uneven ground nearby.

The patient was stabilized and transported to a local trauma center for further medical treatment.

Officials confirmed no additional injuries occurred during the operation. The response involved a structured confined space entry in a highly dangerous environment.

Authorities credited the coordinated effort of the crews for safely resolving the incident and preventing a potentially more serious outcome.
