Dallas, Texas – A traffic stop in Dallas escalated into an escape from custody after a handcuffed suspect took control of a patrol vehicle and later jumped out while it was still moving on a highway.

At approximately 5:35 p.m. on May 30, 2026, officers Ibrahim Kante and Kenneth Harper conducted a traffic stop in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue for a registration violation. The driver, Stacey Huffman, 37, was arrested on charges including driving while license invalid, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Huffman was handcuffed and placed in the rear seat of a squad car while officers continued their investigation.

Authorities reported that Huffman managed to free his left hand from the handcuffs and concealed both hands behind his body. While being transported to jail, he attempted to open the locked rear door and removed his seatbelt.

At approximately 6:10 p.m., officers stopped the squad car on northbound Interstate 35 near Illinois Avenue and exited the vehicle to restrain him. Huffman then moved into the driver’s seat and drove away, while Officer Harper entered the back seat and Officer Kante remained outside.

During the incident, Officer Harper attempted to deploy a Taser, but it was not effective after the suspect pulled away the wires. Harper then struck Huffman with his duty weapon as the vehicle accelerated.

Huffman continued driving erratically, causing Harper to be thrown across the back seat. The patrol car traveled approximately 1,000 feet at speeds reaching around 50 miles per hour.

Huffman then opened the driver’s door and exited the moving vehicle. Officer Harper regained control of the squad car and avoided a crash. Huffman was found unconscious and taken into custody.

Both Huffman and Officer Harper were transported to hospital. Harper was treated and released, while Huffman remains hospitalized.

Upon release, Huffman is expected to face additional charges including escape from custody and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, along with the initial offenses.

The investigation remains ongoing.
