Swansea, Wales – RNLI lifeguards launched a major rescue response at Three Cliffs Bay during a busy half-term period after a powerful rip current pulled multiple beachgoers into danger.
The mass rescue unfolded on the afternoon of Monday 25 May, during hot and sunny conditions that brought large crowds to the coastline. Lifeguards responded as several people were dragged into difficulty offshore, triggering a rapidly escalating emergency.
Lifeguard Morgan Burgess reached two children first, with one boy struggling to stay afloat and a girl unable to return to shore. Using a rescue tube, he secured the boy and brought both children safely back to land.
As the situation developed, Lifeguard Rhys Sabine entered the water on a rescue board and reached an adult man and woman caught in the current. He brought them onto the board and called for urgent backup as more casualties were identified.
Lifeguard Riley Jones entered the water with a rescue tube while Morgan returned with a board to support the expanding operation.
Rhys then spotted a man going under and immediately left his board to swim to him, bringing him back to the surface. At the same time, Riley supported a woman and a young girl in the water, keeping them afloat with a rescue tube as Morgan arrived to assist.
Working together, the team brought all casualties back to shore safely.
One adult male required oxygen treatment on the beach before being handed over to a family member after medical assessment, with emergency services later stood down.
Across the wider holiday period, lifeguards saved three lives, rescued seven people, and assisted many others in difficulty along the Swansea coastline. Additional incidents included injuries, missing children, and further water rescues supported by emergency services.
Officials highlighted the sustained pressure on lifeguard teams during the busy period and stressed that cold water shock remains a serious risk even in warmer weather.
